What holders of existing Deck/Engineer Licenses must do to Comply with STCW-95? 

There are many holders of deck and engineer license that for what ever reason did not complete the STCW-95 "Gap-Closing" requirements allowed from August 1, 1998 through February 1, 2002.  Now, even operators of vessels of less than 200 GRT, on foreign voyages must also comply with STCW-95.  Below are the training and certification requirements for various deck and engineer licenses and what you must do now to obtain the STCW-95 Certificate:

"Left Click" on one of the license levels:

Master, Mate up to 100 Gross Tons: (When used for Foreign Voyages, must comply with STCW-95) Near Coastal (International)

  • Take the Basic Safety Training Program: 4 modules, 5 days
  • Passenger vessels carrying +12 passengers - Crowd Management & Crisis Management/Human Behavior.

Master, Mate up to 200GRT/500(ITC): (When used for Foreign Voyages, must comply with STCW-95) Near Coastal (International)

  • Basic Safety Training Program (4 modules)
  • Bridge Resource Management Program
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft & Lifeboats or Rescue Boats (any level)
  • Passenger vessels carrying +12 passengers - Crowd Management & Crisis Management/Human Behavior.

Master & Chief Mate 500GRT through Unlimited:
Existing License

  • Basic Safety Training Program: (station bill may require Advanced Fire fighting)
  • Bridge Resource Management
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft (if you hold a Lifeboatman document you are exempt)
  • ARPA – (If your vessel is equipped).
  • GMDSS – (If your vessel is equipped).
  • Medical First Aid Provider or Medical Person In Charge
  • Fast Rescue Boat - If your vessel is equipped or you are on the station bill as an operator.
  • Passenger vessels carrying +12 passengers - Crowd Management & Crisis Management/Human Behavior

OICNW/Third & Second Mate 500grt through Unlimited:
Existing License

  • Basic Safety Training Program: (station bill may require Advanced Fire fighting)
  • Bridge Resource Management
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft (if you hold a Lifeboatman document you are exempt)
  • Medical Care Provider
  • ARPA
  • GMDSS
  • Passenger vessels carrying +12 passengers - Crowd Management & Crisis Management
  • If your vessel carries more than 250 barrels of dangerous liquids, you may also be required to take a Dangerous Liquids PIC Tankerman Program.

Engineers: Chief, OICEW/Assistant and DDE:
Existing License

  • Basic Safety Training Program: 4 modules (station bill may require Advanced Fire fighting)
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft (if you hold a Lifeboatman document you are exempt)
  • Medical First Aid Provider
  • If your vessel carries more than 250 barrels of dangerous liquids, you may also be required to take a Dangerous Liquids PIC or DL Engineer Program.
